Moanin’ by Bobby Timmons is a great tune. Here it is played by the great Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers. Some of the best jazz players came up through Blakey’s group. This version of Moanin’ features 24-year old Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, who takes the first solo. Also is Blakey on drums, Cedar Walton on piano, Reggie Workman on bass, Wayne Shorter on sax, and Curtis Fuller on the ‘bone.
The tune is deceptively simple, but it’s easy to rush those quarter note and dotted quarter note rhythms. If you’re not paying attention, you’re gonna speed up instead of laying it back. Here’s how it’s done right, and Freddie blows a killer improvised solo. (mp3)
