Hi Mark-
A good question, and singing along with my guitar is one of my goals, too, every time I learn a new song. For me, it’s all about repetition of the guitar part, whether it’s the chords or the fingerpicking. I start with the guitar and get it down, even if it’s a small piece of the song, I mean REALLY down, deeper than memorized, if I can. I like to whistle, so I’ll often do that, too, because then I only need to remember the melody and not the lyrics, haha. Or I’ll hum since that’s closer to singing. Or, as I play the guitar, I’ll “sing” the lyrics or listen to the melody in my head. Usually I’ll do all of these over the course of learning a tune.
Reminds me of something Sona Jobarteh said she does with her students. She makes them learn the kora part until they CAN’T forget it. And then they add another part. I think it’s something like that. It’s been a while since she spoke with me about practice, but that was one of the gems. Hope that helped. The real trick is to just keep at it. Took me a few months to get this tune by Blaze Foley under my fingers and my voice. It’s been a bit over a year and the tune is now feeling really solid. It takes a lot of time and repetition, at least for me it does. Hope you can get it down faster! Best wishes.
